RSPCA confirm: Freedom Food pig farmer is NOT to be prosecuted...
Lots of our supporters have been asking about the outcome of our investigation at Wood Common Farm, Congleton last July.

Here is the RSPCA's response...
"Wood Common Farm was suspended from the Freedom Food scheme in August 2013, as soon as we became aware of the allegations via Hillside. As at 12 January 2014 it remains suspended from the scheme.

All Freedom Food members are expected to adhere to our higher welfare standards at all times, and any breach of this is taken incredibly seriously. On receiving the video evidence from Hillside in August 2013, the RSPCA launched a thorough investigation. A case file was prepared and sent to our prosecutions department, which included a full report from an independent vet, specialising in pigs. The vet had access to all the witness statements; the farm’s vet records and also viewed the entire unedited footage, provided by Hillside. He was unable to conclude that all three pigs were not receiving the appropriate vet treatment. On the basis of this evidence he was unable to conclude that any animals had suffered or that there was evidence of any breaches of welfare legislation. The decision was made that the RSPCA could not move forward with an animal welfare prosecution, as based on independent expert advice we concluded that there was not a realistic chance of conviction given the evidence. While we could not move forward with a prosecution due to the lack of admissible evidence, RSPCA did identify a number of breaches of both legal and Freedom Food welfare standards during a visit by our Farm Livestock Officer.

Please be assured that the welfare of the animals involved is always the RSPCA’s primary concern. Thank you for contacting us. Kind regards RSPCA Advice Team"

Hillside responds...

We have to point out that we told the RSPCA about the awful conditions on this farm much earlier on 19th July 2013.  Hillside filmed the pigs in question, still on the farm 24 hours after our first report to the Society.  They took none of their own evidence and told us that they were just going to moniter the farm in the future. It was only a month later after we told the RSPCA we knew Wood Common Farm was RSCPA Freedom Food accredited, that they suspended the farm from their scheme.  We have a copy of an PREVIOUS email (dated 29th August 2013) from the RSPCA which confirms their actions on these dates.  We find it incredulous that there could be any doubt that these pigs were suffering. It seems clear to us that the RSPCA had no intention of actually prosecuting the farmer and further confirms our suspicions that being Freedom Food accredited effectively exempts the farmer from prosecution.

We recently reported in a previous email...

On reporting the farm to the RSPCA they initially took 'no action'.  However, later, on realising we knew of the farm's Freedom Food accreditation, and seeing the ensuing Sunday Mirror Report, they promised they would prosecute the farmer.  We were disappointed (but not surprised) to see that they had not bothered to obtain any of their own evidence, instead relying totally on the footage Hillside's investigators had taken at the farm.  Finally, after a five month RSPCA 'investigation' during which an RSPCA Chief Inspector described conditions on the farm as 'totally unacceptable', they have now informed us that their vet will not support a prosecution!  We might well ask the RSPCA why they did not show the vet our footage FIVE months ago?  Surely it would have been sensible to consult a vet at the beginning of their investigation?  Of course, this is all smoke and mirrors - we don't believe that the RSPCA ever intended to successfully prosecute this farmer, or any other farmer on one of their Freedom Food accredited farms.  We believe that they simply told the press, and the public, what they wanted to hear, knowing full well, once the media interest had died down, that they would not proceed to court.  Our past experience has shown this is standard RSPCA practice for when yet another of their so called 'higher welfare' farms are found lacking.

Isn't this the most unbelievable thing? Or maybe not as we are talking about RSPCA, famous for their double standards. Evil or Very Mad

In effect the RSPCA won`t prosecute as it would look bad on them as they allowed the farm to join the scheme in the first instance.
No doubt the outcome would be different had the scheme not had links with the RSPCA.

That's why they are  not being prosecuted, quite clearly. Mad

But, Admin, people who use this site fairly regularly are quite well aware that if even one pony or one pig dies while in your care, despite having been very carefully managed, they are all over you like a nasty rash. Even if your animal has not died but managed to get fleas or lice (it happens) they send a gang of FIVE moronic thugs to remove the healthy animal, be it horse, cat, dog owhy. Double standards as usual. Also the vet (so-called) who left two dogs in an over-hot car and was not prosecuted despite one dying? Why not...anyone know?  It strikes me that he (the vet) was one of their horrid 'mates' too...probably wrote damning and lying reports to help them in their witch hunts IMO. And got well-paid for them!
Obviously to do with the fact that the farmer pays to be endorsed by 'RSPCA Approved'...'Freedom Foods acredited' and similar crap. Don't ever believe anything they say. Also there is a grim video of 'Freedom Foods' chickens which for financial reasons have been fattened too quickly hence their little legs are too weak to support them so they use their wings to drag themselves across the floor. And of course they never see daylight.

Shame that Hillside doesn't have access to the millions the scum have, then maybe they could take out a private prosecution against them and the farmer.
Then again, if they did receive the same amount in donations as those low-lives they would use it for what it was given for - looking after the animals!!

Freedom Foods? Empty Freedom Foods? Five Freedoms?

Post  Trilby Bee Fri Jan 17, 2014 12:17 pm

So true...all the bad press they have recently had, dreadful press of them driving people to suicide and all the fit animals they kill...but still people give them more and more. There's an RSPCA 'charity' shop locally  which is closed for a couple of weeks for refurbishment. There is a mountain of pet food on their doorstep which I assume the painters will take in when they arrive to work on the shop. I cannot think why people would do this when there are small caring charities locally which are feeling the pinch and which, in my opinion, are far more deserving and genuine.

Freedom to exhibit natural behaviour? That really is one of the five famous 'freedoms' ... it's all a bloody gimmick. In a barn without daylight and unable to walk..oh yes, that is very natural! Most decent farmers would be ashamed of keeping pigs...or anything else for that matter in such obviously miserable conditions.. And there have been cases worse than this one but they seem to have mysteriously vanished when you look for them. There should be a petition to GET them sued. But there won't be and all the vets who are on their side lie and get well-paid to do so, it really sickens me. Mad
