Just heard from a friend today that there is a programme on Channel 4 tonight (Monday 7 Jan) about some elderly man who has been accumulating horses all his life and can no longer cope. I do not have a TV, but apparently RSPCA feature. What's the betting that they will be sugar sweet and bending over backwards to help as long as the cameras are there? Let's be nice so people will send us money. What's also betting and what we won't be told is that after they remove them to 'a place of safety' (ROFL) they will be shot asap and nothing spent on them. I don't fancy their chances if they are sent to World Horse Welfare either. The owner could check this by looking at the National Equine Database after they have gone (altho he most likely won't bother to) and type in the horses' passport numbers. Mine came back as 'reported deceased'. Please watch if you get the chance and let me know what happens!
PS: I think the programme is called 'Horse Hoarder'.

Well thankfully the RSPCA didn`t play too much of a part in the program.
Someone phoned the RSPCA with their concerns for the horses but another horse lady was already on hand to help the old fellow out. With the agreement of the owner the RSPCA took five of the most unwell horses (their fate wasn`t mentioned but we can guess) and the horse lady helped the owner sell twenty odd horses. At the end of the program he still had about twenty horses which the RSPCA were "monitoring" the situation.
The owner was a person who had virtually dropped out of society, the horses were his life. He was a typical horse lover that wouldn`t see a horse homeless and couldn`t turn one away even though he wasn`t really in a position to take anymore in. The RSPCA tried to lay 18 charges of cruelty which only 6 stuck but he still virtually got off free. I think this can go down to yet another failed prosecution by the RSPCA i hope the public took note of the RSPCA firing two darts into a horse and it taking a further two hours to chase it around the field to be subdued which in itself was a cruel act because had the right dosage been used the horse would have been subdued alot earlier.
If the horse lady hadn`t already been involved god knows what the outcome would have been, we can only summise.
Though the owner couldn`t look after himself the horses weren`t exactly emaciated but it was obvious the he was struggling but his heart was in the right place.

RSPCA on TV Monday 7th January. Empty Horse Hoarder

Thank you for that ADMIN: my friend (the one who told me this was about to be shown) said much the same as you, that the RSPCA kept a very low profile, and in fact seemed to avoid being on camera...which is unlike them. She said their faces were pixellated to avoid identification. I only ever saw this before during filming of a siege when armed police were pixellated so as not to be recognisable. Other than which they wear balaclavas. She also said there was a dead foal but missed a few minutes so wasn't sure why, but was sure that the old guy would not be paying much in the way of court costs as he had nothing, altho the horses were not in a bad state; and she has two horses herself. So we assume that the RSPCA has wasted more money, do we?

T. The death of the foal i think still went unsolved, it definately wasn`t starved but the horse lady did say that two stallions shouldn`t be in the same field as they would fight. Wether the foal got in the way of the stallions is not clear and wasn`t mentioned later in the program. Had the horse lady not been on hand when she was then i think the elderly owner would have been "steam rollered" by the RSPCA. The cost to the RSPCA for taking this to court wasn`t disclosed but it definately wasn`t worth it because as you say, the owner has nothing.

RSPCA on TV Monday 7th January. Empty Horse Hoarder

I watched this too and was very disappointed by the woman who was 'helping' the poor guy had dipped out of society due to a family tragedy and the horses were his life and his reason for being by all accounts. This so called helpful lady although no doubt did manage to fend off the RSPCA to some extent also seems to think she can take over this man's life. How he chooses to live is up to him no one else. He plead guilty to the 6 charges not found guilty, but should he have plead not guilty? The costs on a guilty plea plus the fact they had snaffled the 6 and 20 odd were sold no doubt gave the Mags no option but to be quite reasonable. Will he stick to the 22 left or do we all think he will want to carry on as before. Also he doesnt appear anti RSPCA at all since he still shops in their charity shop!
No charges against hoof care but they are all feral an no doubt not seen farrier for years
No feral horse is wormed so why did this woman have the audacity to use the "meager" amounts received for the sale of the ponies to buy wormers (looked like from a vet - ie inflated prices).
What experience did the inspector have in equines in giving improvement notice incl to worm them? Did he know that these notices ARE NOT ENFORCABLE under the law - unless issued by DEFRA - I doubt it!

Feed back on this please as I appear to be the only one raising these issues?

Thanks

I wouldn`t have said the horses were feral, the only time they showed any fear was when they were being chased by a dozen RSPCA staff. Personally i think he was lucky that he had the woman on his side, if he hadn`t then it could have been a whole lot worse for him.

As anticipated, many genuine animal lovers saw this genuine, if somewhat misguided, old guy and want to help!! Once again the RSPCA shoots itself in the foot!

He's got over 7000 LIKES on his FB page and people offering all manner of practical help plus items he needs...bed, microwave, cooker (apparently he has a geneator). I will be interested to see if the RSPCA got such an enthusiastic response to their visit to him.

I very much doubt it T, that`s one visit that they would rather forget. I would also be interested to find out what his horse situation is to date.

Hello Millie and hope your cases are going OK. Well, yes, Clwyd DID apparently plead guilty (sorry I didn't see it yet, my son has it saved for me on Catch Up, so am going by what I hear from other people like yourself, Admin, a couple of friends etc). The reason I changed my plea to GUILTY was that I was advised by my useless Legal Aid team that if the case went to trial, it would take a minimum of two - possibly three - full days and that they estimated the total costs to be in the region of just under £20k. They were not sure if I could get an expert witness paid for by Legal Aid and that would have been another few grand. Yes, they were the pits and I still feel I should report them to the Law Society, but I only heard of Nigel Weller after the case.
As you say, no charges against hoof care (lack of) but then as you say, feral horses are neither wormed nor trimmed to the best of one's knowledge. Yet the vet that they got to badmouth me wrote in his report, as tho this were proof of sheer and utter neglect, that my horse had NOT SEEN A VET FOR ELEVEN MONTHS. So? I have not seen a doctor for almost twenty years but I haven't been 'sezed and taken to a place of safety'. My mare saw a vet less than a year before the theft to have her teeth done. Everyone I know does dental on a horse annually, but the made it sound as tho it had been eleven years, not eleven months. And the magistrates, who are normal members of the public, not especially smart, who know zero about horses, fall for it. And true, the 'Improvement Notices' are NON-STATUTORY notices and if you feel like it you can tear them up.
As we are all by now no doubt well aware, Clwyd Davies has had some very bad press on Facebook after the initial enthusiasm for setting up his page and a PayPal account to help him and no-one is sure how seriously to take it. Some people think it is a smear campaign while others think the public is being duped by Clwyd and his helper, MIchelle...
To cut a long story short, going back to your idea of going public, are you still planning to do so? I cannot work out who was behind this programme...RSPCA are normally very sneaky and deliberately turn up at a time they have been told you will not be there, but on this occasion they were there for the cameras but kept a remarkably low profile. It is very unusual for them to be so open. Was it planned by Michelle? I rather think it must have been.
Hope you are getting on OK with your case; let us know?

Hi again Millie

Meant to say in my earlier post today (Thursday 17th), re: Mr Davies pleading guilty and not being actually found guilty. As you are probably aware, but something which came as a shock to me and friends who went with me to court: they had a large notice in the waiting room which you couldn't miss which actually said if you plead guilty 'up front' (I think that was the terminology), then you get a 30% reduction off your sentence. That is totally true, we could not believe our eyes...you no doubt knew that already but my dopey legal firm did not tell me that and many people I have mentioned it to do not believe me; but I have no reason to make it up. It really makes you wonder about the mentality of the British legal system.

Hope all going well with you.
