"30 dogs and cats seized, two arrested as RSPCA launches investigation into Leeds vets"
A vets practice in Leeds is facing an investigation by the RSPCA after 30 cats and dogs were seized amid fears for their health.
Two people have been arrested after police raised concerns about the wellbeing of animals at Armley Vets, on Town Street, Armley.
Officers were initially called to the practice to investigate an alleged domestic incident.
But once there it is thought they spotted potential problems with a number of pets.
RSPCA spokeswoman Leanne Plumtree said: “Twenty-two dogs and eight cats were removed from a veterinary practice on Town Street, Armley, Leeds because of concerns for their welfare.
“The animals were seized by police and placed in RSPCA care. A man and a woman were arrested by police and interviewed by the RSPCA.”
The investigation was prompted after police were called to the premises on February 24.
Sgt Alan Justham, of the West Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Police were called to a report of a domestic incident at Armley Vets, in Town Street, Armley.
“While at the property officers became concerned for the welfare of a number of dogs and cats at the premises.
“A 48-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to protected animals.
“Officers notified the RSPCA who removed a number of animals from the property.”
Both those arrested, including a man understood to be the vet Gary Samuel, have been released on bail.
Mr Samuel declined to comment when contacted by the Yorkshire Evening Post yesterday.
Miss Plumtree said the inquiry remained ongoing and no further information was available.
